AC Running but the House Still Won't Cool?
Here’s What’s Actually Happening
Every summer in the Inland Empire, we get a wave of calls that all start the same way: “My AC is running nonstop, cold air is coming out of the vents, and my house still won’t get below 80.”
It happens most during the extreme heat stretches—like the run of upper-90s-to-110° days the valleys just went through, with overnight lows stuck in the 70s so nothing ever got a chance to cool off.
Here’s the frustrating part: sometimes that’s a broken air conditioner. And sometimes that’s a perfectly healthy air conditioner losing a fair fight. Knowing which one you’re dealing with saves you a service call—or saves you from sweating through another week because you assumed nothing was wrong.

Put your hand in front of a vent. Is the air actually cold?

Your AC doesn't cool your house to a number
Your air conditioner removes a certain amount of heat per hour. Whether your home actually gets comfortable depends on whether it can remove heat faster than the sun, your attic, your windows, and your walls are pouring it in.
Two things follow from that, and they explain almost everything.
1. Your System was Sized for a Specific Outdoor Temperature
When a system is designed properly, the contractor sizes it for the hottest typical conditions in your area — for most of the Inland Empire, roughly 100 to 105 degrees. That’s not cutting corners. Oversizing a system so it could handle 115° would make it short-cycle and run poorly for the other 340 days of the year, leaving your home clammy and wearing the equipment out early. So on a 110° day you are genuinely past what your equipment was built to overcome.
2. Air Conditioners Get Weaker as it Gets Hotter
This one surprises people. Your outdoor unit works by dumping your home’s heat into the outside air. When that outside air is already 110 degrees, it’s much harder to do. Real cooling output drops measurably as outdoor temperatures climb — right at the moment you need the most of it.
So on the hottest afternoon of the year you have a system working harder, delivering less, against a bigger load. Running continuously isn’t a symptom of failure. It’s the design working.
The 20-degree Rule: Test Your Own System in Five Minutes
There’s one measurement that tells you most of what you need to know, and you can do it with a $12 thermometer.
- Let the system run for at least 15 minutes.
- Put the thermometer in the return vent — the big one that pulls air in — and note the temperature.
- Put it in a supply register close to the air handler and note that temperature.
- Subtract.
That difference is the temperature split. A healthy system reads roughly 16 to 22 degrees.
Here's How to Read Your Result:
- 16–22°F and the house still won’t cool. Your equipment is doing its job. The problem is heat gain — attic, ducts, insulation, windows, or a system that’s simply undersized for the house. This isn’t a repair. It’s a comfort problem worth solving, but no part is going to fix it.
- Under 14°F. Something is genuinely wrong — low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty evaporator coil, a failing compressor, or a badly clogged filter. At this point you’re closer to the AC not blowing cold air territory, and it’s worth reading through those causes.
- Over 25°F. Usually an airflow restriction — a blocked return, a collapsed duct, or a filter that hasn’t been changed in a very long time.
This single number reframes the whole conversation. It’s the difference between “my AC is broken” and “my house is gaining heat faster than my AC can remove it.” Those need completely different solutions and completely different budgets.

What's Actually Normal During an Inland Empire Heat Wave
Measure your expectations against physics, not against the number on your thermostat:
- Running nonstop from about 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Normal on a 105°+ day. Continuous run time is more efficient than cycling anyway.
- Indoor temperature holding at 76–80° when you’ve set it to 72°. Normal. Frustrating, but normal.
- Cooling down nicely overnight, then drifting up through the afternoon. Normal — that’s your building envelope, not your equipment.
- Some rooms running 4–6° warmer than others, especially west-facing rooms and second stories. Extremely common here, and almost always a duct or insulation issue rather than an equipment issue.
If your home is holding in the high 70s while it’s 108° outside, your air conditioner is doing roughly what it was built to do. The opportunity isn’t a repair — it’s reducing how much heat gets in.
What's Not Normal
Even with cold air at the vents, a few things mean you should stop and call:
- Indoor temperature climbing past 85° and still rising. The system isn’t keeping pace at all.
- Ice on the refrigerant line or the indoor coil. Shut it off, run fan-only to thaw, and call. Running it iced up can destroy the compressor.
- The system shutting itself down in the afternoon or tripping a breaker. Extreme heat can push a struggling system into a high-pressure safety lockout. That’s the equipment protecting itself and telling you something.
- Burning, musty, or electrical smells. Turn it off and call.

The Real Culprit in Most Inland Empire Homes: Your Attic
If your split test came back normal but the house still won’t cool, this is almost always where the answer lives.
On a 108° day, a poorly vented attic in this region can climb well past 140 degrees. Now think about what’s up there: your ductwork. In most homes built here from the 1960s onward, the supply ducts run straight through that 140° space.
Air leaves your air handler at 55°. It travels through flex duct sitting in 140° air. If those ducts are leaky, crushed, disconnected, or thinly insulated, that air arrives at your bedroom register at 65° instead — and you’ve thrown away a third of the cooling you’re paying for.
We find disconnected flex duct in Inland Empire attics constantly. Sometimes it’s been that way for years, quietly dumping conditioned air into an attic while the homeowner blames the AC.
Three fixes, ranked by cost-effectiveness:
- Seal and repair the ducts. Torn or disconnected flex duct is shockingly common and it’s the single biggest bang-for-buck fix in homes here. Repairing leaky attic ductwork can recover a meaningful share of lost capacity for a fraction of replacement cost.
- Add attic insulation. Many older Redlands and Yucaipa homes still have their original R-11 or R-19. Bringing attic insulation up to current standards reduces the heat load your AC is fighting in the first place.
- Then, and only then, look at the equipment. If the ducts and envelope are sound and the system still can’t hold the house, you may genuinely be undersized — which is a conversation about replacing the system, ideally in the fall when you’re not deciding under duress.
Doing these in the wrong order is the most expensive mistake homeowners make here. A new system in a leaky house underperforms an older system in a tight one.
Frequently Asked Questions
My AC is blowing cold air but the house won't cool. Is it broken?
Often, no. If your temperature split is in the normal 16–22° range, the equipment is working and your home is gaining heat faster than the system can remove it. That points to ductwork, insulation, or system sizing rather than a failed component.
How cold should the air from my vents be?
Roughly 16 to 22 degrees cooler than the air entering your return vent. If the return reads 78°, supply should read about 56–62°. A smaller gap points to a problem; a much larger one usually means restricted airflow.
Is it bad for my AC to run continuously all day?
No. Continuous operation on a 105°+ day is normal and more efficient than short cycling. What’s concerning is continuous operation combined with an indoor temperature that keeps climbing.
Why is my upstairs so much hotter than downstairs?
Heat rises, and your upstairs ducts run through the hottest part of the attic. Most two-story Inland Empire homes need duct improvements, zoning, or a dedicated second unit to fix this properly. A tech can measure airflow room by room to tell you which
Would a bigger AC fix this?
Sometimes, but it’s the last thing to check, not the first. An oversized system in a leaky house performs worse than a right-sized system in a tight one. Ducts and insulation first, equipment second.
My AC is 15 years old. Replace now or wait?
If it’s still cooling and holding your home in the 78–80° range during extreme heat, you can usually finish the season. If you’re facing a repair over roughly a third of replacement cost, or the system uses R-22 refrigerant, the math starts favoring replacement. What to do Today While it's Still Hot
Practical things that actually move the needle:
- Set the thermostat to 78 and use fans
This is also what Southern California Edison and the state ask during grid strain. A ceiling fan makes 78° feel like about 74° and costs a fraction of what the compressor does.
- Pre-cool in the morning
Run the house down to 72° between 7 and 11 a.m., then let it drift. Your AC works far more efficiently at 85° outside than at 110°, and you avoid the expensive 4–9 p.m. peak window entirely.
- Close blinds on south- and west-facing windows before noon
Not after. Once sun is on the glass, that heat is already inside.
- Change your filter
A restricted filter chokes airflow and can push a marginal system over the edge. Check monthly during summer here — the dust load in this valley is no joke.
- Do NOT set the thermostat to 65 to "cool it faster"
It doesn’t. Your AC has one speed. You’ve only guaranteed it runs until it fails or you give up.
- Rinse the outdoor coil
Power it down at the disconnect first, then hose the fins gently from the inside out. Cottonwood fluff, dust, and dryer lint smother condenser coils here, and a smothered coil can’t reject heat.
